When we first started the app, the app icon resembled the windows logo. The application also had very less features. Only included Freshly Pressed and was also named “Freshly Pressed” on the Windows Phone 7 store.
Fast forward to 2016, and the app is now a rich, featured WordPress client on Windows devices. Its features include Discover, Reader, Blog management and notifications. With this change, the logo and app design also needs to update.
We wanted to make our app stand out from the other WordPress apps. In this same time, Microsoft in its weird way of working, removed the app from the store. They wanted our branding to be distinct from WordPress. This made sense as this is a third party app and not directly associated with WordPress or Automatic.
While redesigning, we wanted to make sure we indicate resemblance to the WordPress W icon but also be distinct from it.
We followed the following points when redesigning:
- Sharp and Crisp
- Simple and Clean
- Unique
In the end we created the following wireframe design for the new logo:

Notice that we have added a little perspective to the logo. So at times you may get a 3D look to the W or you may also imagine it to be a W created using paper folds origami.
Below are some variations of the new official logo.

In the process of this redesign, we have taken a shorter name for our app. The app is now called “WP for Windows” as compared to the older “WordPress for Windows”.
