Android: UX improvements and Quick stats

We have released an new update to the beta channel for our Studio for WP (WordPress) app for Android devices.

This update focuses on some UX improvements and updates to quick stats.

The update will be rolled out in batches to all users in the next few days.

Home Screen 

We have an updated home screen for first time users.

Logged in users will continue to see blogs tab as home screen.

Login improvements

Similar to home screen, the login screen gets an update. This the first of a series of updates planned.

 

Stats

The quick stats tab for your blogs and websites has been updated with new stats for posts and country views. More updates to this section to follow in next updates.

 

Premium/Subscription services

We have always kept basic features FREE for single account blogs.

However, we realize that getting premium/subscription based content is difficult.

With this update, it takes just a few taps to purchase this content in an monthly subscription. (Prices vary by country/region.)

Windows 10: New Design elements

This week we have made updates to our design elements for our Windows 10 app for PC and Mobile.

If you are having any issue in using our Windows 10 Mobile app, please read this post.

Header

We have reduced the space taken up by the app header and extended the app layout into the title bar, providing more space for your data.

Editor

We have an extended toolbar for large screen devices on the editor page. This gives you quick access to more formatting features like featured images, tags & categories etc.

Unsaved edits

We will now remind you for any unsaved edits when you navigate away for back from the editor.

Quick commands

In link with a small header, all our action commands have been moved up into the top of the window. These now offer a consistent experience for commands and flyouts.

Windows 10 Mobile: Login With Authorization code

Studio for WP app is available on multiple platforms including Windows 10 PC, Windows 10 Mobile, Windows Phone 8.1, Android and Alexa enabled devices.

Earlier last week, we ran into a login issue with Windows 10 Mobile devices. Our investigation revealed that this issue is due to updated login pages at WordPress.com and causing crashes on Windows 10 Mobile devices, including from the browser. Since Microsoft is no longer updating Windows 10 devices except for security fixes, we do not expect a fix very soon.

Introducing login with Authorization code

For Windows 10 Mobile devices, we are enabling a feature called ‘Login with Authorization code‘. When adding a blog to your account, you will now be prompted to enter an authorization code instead of your regular sign-in process.

You can get the authorization code using any our app on any other platform or device. Supported devices include Windows 10 PC and Android devices.

 

How to get the authorization code

• Login using the regular sign-in process on our ‘Studio for WP’ app on PC/Android device.
• Head over to Settings and click Accounts.
• Tap and hold the account you wish to get authorization code, and select ‘copy auth code’.
• Authorization code is coped to clipboard, you may send it to your Windows 10 Mobile phone using any email, text, chat apps like WhatsApp or any other app.

To get latest features, we recommend using our Windows 10 PC and Android app. We may re-enable login using regular process on Windows 10 Mobile, if the login issue fixed either by WordPress or Microsoft.

April Update: What’s New

This is a summary of all the things we updated in the month of April.

Personalization

We have added a new option to choose the theme for the navigation menu. You can now have a light theme for the app and a dark theme for the navigation menu.

Additionally, you can turn off the Transparency effects if that’s your thing.

The new theme features  are currently rolling out for Windows 10 users only.

Tags, Categories and more

On Windows 10, The blog’s home page has been updated to feature some quick links to Tags, Categories, Users, Media library and more.

For Android Users, we have added a ‘More’ tab for the links to Media library, Tags & Categories and Users.

This is in addition to the Today Snapshot available earlier.

Trending

Tending is a new section added exclusively for Android users to catch a glimpse of what’s trending in WordPress world.

Send us your feedback on this new section. All suggestions and requests are welcome.

Updates: March Rollup

We have been working on a series of updates across all devices and below is the summary of everything that’s updated since our last post.

‘Blog’ first

For all logged-in users, the home page is now the blogs tab. This is the first step in providing increased focus on productivity.

Quick actions

We have added some quick actions to the blogs tab so that information is available quicker.

Improved Navigation

The Navigation pane has been improved with blog first approach. On PC, the navigation pane will now stay open for better usability. We plan to add a new user preference to turn off this feature, its that is your thing.

In addition, the user profile tab has a new position in the bottom area of the navigation pane for mobile users similar to the PC.

Faster load times

There was certainly some lag and delay in app startup. That has been improved and the app responds faster.

Windows Phone 8.1, is still here

We updated the package for Windows Phone 8.1 customers for technical reasons. There are no new features for that version in this release. Although not actively developed with new features, the app will remain available for these devices until supported by Microsoft.

“Alexa, open Voice Press”

Hello, Hello! We are now available on Amazon Echo devices via the Alexa assistant. We are called ‘VoicePress’

Using Voice Press

Say “Alexa, open Voice Press”. To get your notifications, say “Alexa, Ask Voice Press for my notifications” or “How is my blog doing today” to get some stats.

We are very excited to bring you this functionality! This is a first release and expect more to come on Alexa.

If you are in the US, here is a direct link to Alexa skill on Amazon.com. This skill is currently available in English for US, UK and India regions.

Style Update: Our apps are more cleaner and easy to use

Following our last set of updates in June, we have another major set of updates to both our Windows 10 and Android apps.

More significantly, we now support latest features available to the new Windows 10 Fall creators update from Microsoft. This should make our apps more faster, reliable and give you a great user experience.

Reveal

All throughout the application, now get a new hover animation/highlight called “Reveal”.

Blogs

All the tabs in the blogs module get a face-lift. The UX is more cleaner and easy to access.

Menus

No more the annoying blue menus! We have updated the menus to match the new design.

Sign-in

Ever stuck on sign-in page or forgot the login credentials or something else? Now you can easily skip he sign-in my using the new menu.

Simplified Theme in Android

In the picture above is the old design on the left and our new light and dark themes on right,

The improved look of our Android app with a simplified, clean and crisp light and dark themes.

Media Library and Themes

In our updates last month we also introduced some premium features for our Android customers like Media library management and Theme management.

Please do subscribe to our monthly/quarterly/yearly subscriptions on Google Play and access premium content on our Android app. Basic blog management always remain free on all platforms.

New Design: Latest updates to our Windows 10 app

We have updated our design and user experience on Windows 10 devices. The updated design is live for all Windows 10 users who have Windows 10 Anniversary update (v1607) or later installed.

Users with the Windows 10 creators update, will also benefit from the new Fluent design recommended by Microsoft.

Lets go over all the new areas of the application.

Navigation

 

All navigation is now performed via the hamburger menu in the top left corner. The menu is present on all screens and provides a quick way to change context.

Reading View

The reading view has received a face lift with more emphasis on content and distraction free reading.

Sign-in

The sign-in process is now simple, easy and fast. New users will be welcomed with a new landing page with the Sign-in button front and center.

Blog

The blog management page has a simplified top level navigation. Further updates will follow.

Editor

The new editor improvements include a new place to edit Featured image, tags and categories.

In Summary

The update is now available to all our customers. The new app name “Studio for WP” will be gradually rolling out on Windows 10.

April Update: Filters, Sign-in improvements

We have a new update for our Android users!

Included in this update is a mix of new features and improvements. Any pesky errors during signup and two factor authentication are gone! We fixed those bugs and everyone should see a better sign-in experience.

We have two new features in this build, you can now filter blog posts and pages using the new ‘filter’ option.

Click the filter icon at the top of the screen.

You will see a selection of blog post statuses like drafts, published, trash etc. Select one or more to filter your posts.

Another new feature is the ability to tap and hold a blog post to enable the delete menu at the top of the page.
